As mentioned in our soccer section of the website this past weekend, Unioto senior soccer standout Erin Bane was forced to leave a match early with what appeared to be a serious knee injury. Monday, an MRI confirmed that to unfortunately be true as Bane’s results showed a tear. Bane will return to the doctor on Wednesday to prepare for surgery, and then a lengthy rehab.
Bane is one of the league’s great athletes and her loss will not only hurt the soccer program but other Unioto programs as well. It was just a year ago when Bane was seemingly finding the net every night in Unioto’s regional run in soccer. Bane was also a member of two SVC champion basketball squads early in her career, and was last year’s SVC softball player of the year.
I am no doctor, so I hate to speculate until we get the report on Wednesday; however, you would assume the injury will wipeout the rest of soccer and squash any hopes of Bane returning to the basketball court this winter. If all goes well, it probably is realistic to think the reigning POY could return to the softball diamond this spring.
Not long ago, we were reporting that Unioto’s Mallory Retherford tore her ACL and was forced to have surgery sidelining her for six months. Since then a little over a month has passed, and the word on Retherford’s rehab is good news. In talking to people close to Bane and to the Unioto athletic department, Retherford and Bane are good friends, and they are sure to push each other back to action as soon as possible.
SVCsportszone would like to let Erin know our thoughts and prayers are with her during this tough time, and we look forward to seeing her in action as soon as possible.
