UNIOTO RUNS AGAINST ELITE FIELD TO START THE SEASON
The OHSAA runs a state meet preview on the state meet course to open each season.  It is the only invitational in the state that
weekend.  Unioto boys and girls cross country teams participated in the meet.  It is divided by school size into three or four races
to make the races a manageable size.

On the girls’ side, Unioto won the meet. This is a first – for boys or girls - in this meet.  Haley Wright won the meet with a 19:
42.  Unioto beat Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary (who was ranked #3 in the state in this week’s state coaches’ poll) 61-102 doubling
them up and beating them by nearly a minute in average time. This marked the first time a Unioto girls’ team has ever beaten a
top-five team.  Wright won the race by 18 seconds leading all 162 runners the entire final mile. Unioto had four in the top 15.
Alex Evans was 6th overall, freshman Tessa Sylvester was 13th, Elena Knipp was 15th, and freshman Abbey Mohan was 39th.

On the boys’ side, Unioto finished fourth only 13 points out of first place 125-138. St Vincent St Mary won the meet and was
only four seconds faster in average time. There were 22 schools in the race. In the first poll, Unioto was ranked 9th and SVSM
10th. In Unioto’s top seven, there were three sophomores and three freshmen. Unioto was led by the lone upperclassmen,
defending regional champion David Magda, who finished 5th of 184 runners.  Cole Clever was 10th, Isaiah West was 30th,
freshman Aaron Laplante was 44th, and Trent Miller was 54th to round out the scoring.
